With a 4.3-meter trunk circumference and a height of 18 meters, this Yamazakura (mountain cherry tree) is said to be 110 years old. Lovingly protected by the locals, it blooms beautifully every spring. In 1986, Kurume designated it as a tree to be preserved, and this valuable green asset is well-known amongst the city’s residents. In fact, every year, it draws more visitors, not only locals but also people from the Chikugo region and beyond Fukuoka Prefecture. However, when a typhoon hit in 1991, the trunk was split and the leaves dried on the branches. After this incident, withering became apparent in parts of the tree, prompting local residents to rally together to request that it be repaired. Thanks to this action, this tree has recovered its vigor, and light pink blossoms cheerfully appear in the spring of every year. It is worth seeing the magnificent appearance and abundance of blossoms of this tree reflected in the pond with the blue sky of a sunny day in the background. This splendid scenery is known as Sakaza-sakura, or “Upside-down Cherry Tree”. * This cherry blossom tree usually blooms a week later than other species. * If no address for this location appears on search engine maps, please input “Asai no Ippon Zakura”.
