The Chikugo river was once an excellent fishing ground for catching eel. So much so that the river basin was home to a large number of restaurants specialising in freshwater fish, and Kuroda ward (Daizenjimachi area) was considered as one of Fukuoka's major eel districts.
In recent years, the number of eels in the Chikugo river has dwindled, but still, this has not slowed down the many top ranking eel restaurants known for their exquisite onion, wasabi and tare sauce toppings, nor those old restaurants with over 200 years of history that were once enjoyed by Kurume's Feudal Lord. As they carry on serving this traditional local cuisine, they continue to attract long lines of customers, all eager for a taste of succulent seiro-mushi eel. Along with eel, many of these restaurants also serve a variety of freshwater fish dishes, as well as soft-shelled turtle, and a large range of kaiseki* style dining.
