  • Autumn Leaves in Kurume

    In Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture, there are many places where you can enjoy colored leaves such as Eisho-ji Temple and Ishibashi Cultural Center.

  • Townscape of Kusano area

    Kusano area was a castle town of the Kusano clan, a powerful clan in the medieval period. It was crowded as an inn town on the Bungo-kaido Road in the Edo period, and there are still buildings of both Japanese and Western styles that were built in the Meiji and Taisho periods.

  • Chikugo river

  • Blueberry picking

    It's a winery that brewed wine in Kyoho grape for the first time in Japan in 1972.
    Depending on the season, you can enjoy many kinds of fruit wine such as strawberry, kiwi, blueberry, amanatsu, and persimmon!

  • Ishibashi cultural center

    This cultural and artistic facility was donated by the founder of Bridgestone, Shojiro Ishibashi.
    The garden, decorated with azaleas, roses, iris, autumn leaves, and camellias, is dotted with cultural halls, museums, and Shojiro Ishibashi Memorial Hall, and is loved as a place for strolling and diverting.

  • Pear picking

  • Persimmon picking

    The king of persimmons, ”Fuyu Kaki”, as well as the new variety ”Soushu” and” Taishu”.
    You can enjoy persimmon picking from late September to early December.
    Kurume persimmons are getting sweeter with each drop as autumn deepens.

  • Strawberry picking

    In Kurume City, there are 7 farms where you can pick strawberries such as Amao, the king of strawberries!
    Depending on the farm, you can enjoy it from the beginning of December to the middle of May!

Shrines and temples

  • Kora taisha shrine

    Kora Taisha is one of the largest shrine buildings in Kyushu, standing on Mt. Kora. It's also popular as a night view spot.

  • Bairinji temple

    Bairinji is known as the best training hall for Zen in Kyushu.
    There is a plum grove in the outer garden of the temple, and it is also famous for plum blossoms.

  • Suitengu shrine

    Kurume's Suitengu shrine, located near the Chikugo River, is the head shrine of all Suitengu shrines in Japan.

Kurume Gourmet Guide

  • Kurume ramen

    Kurume is the birthplace of tonkotsu ramen. It was in 1937, and the first owner of Nankin Senryo, who still remains in Kurume, made a cloudy soup with stewed pork bones. This is said to be the origin of the tonkotsu ramen that is popular all over the world.

  • Brewery & Winery

    Kurume is one of the most famous sake brewing districts in Japan. Not only Japanese sake, but also fragrant sesame shochu, grapes, strawberries, blueberry wine, and so on. There are many variations!

Festivals and events

  • Saturday night market

    Saturday night market held every Saturday from the end of June to July. Street stalls line the arcade in the center of Kurume City and it's crowded with many customers.

  • Kurume summer festival

    Kurume's summer festival is held in August. The Taiko (Japanese drum) performance, the abacus dance by 10,000 people, and the finale will be finished by Arima fire-fighting ladder man.

  • Chikugo river fireworks display

    The biggest fireworks display in western Japan has a history of more than 300 years with 18,000 launches.

  • Kora taisha shrine "Okunchi"

    Okunchi in October is the biggest festival in Kora taisha shrine. Shinto rituals such as bow, lion dance, biwa, and drum are performed.

  • Oniyo(Fire festival)

    Oniyo is a traditional event that has been held for about 1,600 years and is one of the three major fire festivals in Japan. At 9 PM on January 7, six giant torches weighing 1.2 tons, and 13 meters in length will be set on fire. You will be moved by the tremendous power!

  • Jojima sake festival & brewery hopping

    Enjoy sampling fresh sake, some of which are unique to the event, as well as food, drink, music, and festivities! Free shuttle buses will run between each of the participating breweries.

Traditional Crafts

  • Kurumegasuri

    Kurumegasuri (Kasuri) was created by a 12-year-old girl in the late Edo period. Nowadays, not only kimono but also sneakers, bags, sundries, and other new products are being developed.
