Head Temple Daihonzan Naritasan Shinshoji, located in Chiba Prefecture, is known all over Japan for housing Fudo Myo, or Acala, one of three Buddhist Kings of Wisdom. Part of its sprit was invited to this branch temple in Kurume, established as a bejeweled portal of good fortune. A giant statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, totaling a cost of 2 billion yen, was erected here. Constructed of reinforced concrete, this grand Kannon stands 62 meters tall. In the middle of her forehead is a gold-plated urna, or whorl of hair studded with 18 diamonds weighing 3 karats. Her breast is inlaid with 56 stones of quartz and jade, and she cradles a 13-meter-long baby. Climb the spiral staircase within this Buddhist statue to a window opening out to views of Mount Unzen in the distance, and take the subterranean tunnel through to Komyokaku Grotto. While the grand marble staircase of 88 steps is gaining fame as a spot to visit, the Museum of Heaven and Hell is also becoming popular.
