Since long ago, Kurume's traditional fabric Kurume-gasuri has been a well loved item, with each wash of the fabric bringing out extra character.
Kurume-gasuri is plain woven cotton fabric that is made with traditional craftsmanship methods of dying and then weaving the fabrics. After using strings to bind the part to become the pattern, the threads are dyed with indigo dye, and the resulting warp and weft threads undergo about 30 different processes to create the cloth.
The high quality of Kurume-gasuri fabric lets the wearer feel cool in the summer but warm in the winter, and recently the cloth is also used to make sneakers, bags and a variety of other goods which are garnering attention overseas.
