The annual Kora Taisha Shrine Festival, also known as “Mount Kora Kunchi,” is held at Kora Taisha Shrine from October 9th to the 11th. This festival celebrates both the Double Ninth Festival and the Autumn Harvest Festival. The Double Ninth Festival is celebrated on September 9th in the Lunar calendar.
The Kora Taisha Shrine Festival is a historic festival that has its roots in the shrine visit of the Kurume domain’s feudal lord back in the Edo period, and it was an event that the people of the Chikugo Plain highly anticipated in autumn. The festival includes events such as archery and horsemanship, an archery competition, a tea offering ceremony, an outdoor tea ceremony, and lion dances and, during the Goen festival, there will also be various traditional Japanese performing arts such as koto, biwa, gin-ei (sung poem), mai-bayashi (a type of Noh performance), and taiko drums.
These events are rare nowadays even within Japan, we highly recommend you drop by!
